How to Stage a Master Bedroom Like a Luxury Hotel

The master bedroom should look and feel like a luxury hotel retreat. When buyers walk in, they should immediately feel a sense of calm, comfort, and aspiration. Here's the exact formula I've used to stage master bedrooms on properties worth up to several million dollars.
Step 1: Remove Heavy or Excess Furniture
For a normal-sized master bedroom, the pieces you want are:
- The bed
- 2 matching nightstands
- 2 matching lamps
- A dresser or console table
- Possibly a chair for the corner
There is elegance in symmetry, especially in a master bedroom. If your room feels tight, consider packing up the dresser or chest of drawers. If you have a king-sized bed in a small room, scaling down to a queen can make all the difference.
Platform bed tip: If you have a platform bed, remove any bedskirts. Show off the modern, streamlined look.
Step 2: Invest in Fresh Bedding
Beautiful bedding is the centerpiece of a well-staged master bedroom. Even if your current bedding is relatively new, use and washing can make it look faded.
My go-to approach: buy a high-quality white comforter. White creates a hotel-level luxurious feeling that buyers instantly connect with. Shop at TJ Maxx Home Goods, Marshalls, or Target for great quality at reasonable prices.
Staging tip: Bedding sets often come with small accent pillows, but their quality rarely creates a high-end look. I usually donate those and stage with good quality throw pillows that coordinate with the room's theme.
Step 3: Layer the Pillows
Here's the pillow formula:
- 4 regular sleeping pillows (make sure they're fluffy, not flattened)
- Back two: plain white pillowcases
- Front two: pillowcases or shams matching the comforter
- In front: 1-3 throw pillows for a pop of color or pattern
If using one throw pillow, a long lumbar style works great across both sleeping pillows. If using two or three, angle them for visual interest.
Step 4: Table Lamps
Place one lamp on each nightstand. If your current lamps look dated or are disproportionate to the nightstand and bed size, consider replacing them.
Budget fix: If the lampshades look worn but the lamps are fine, just buy new shades. I love round, barrel-style shades from Target.
Step 5: Artwork and Mirrors
Three strategies for master bedroom walls:
- Large canvas above the bed: Oversized abstract art creates a dramatic focal point. Pair with a mirror above the dresser.
- Mirror above the bed: Creates a grand, spacious feeling. (Ensure it's properly secured.)
- Symmetrical art above nightstands: Two matching circular mirrors or art pieces, one above each nightstand, for a hotel-style look. Match the hanging heights precisely.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
Add decorative items to each nightstand: a small greenery, an orchid, candles, or a stack of books.
My favorite finishing touches:
- A bench at the foot of the bed with a tray and coffee cups, or throw pillows and an open book
- A draped throw blanket on the corner of the bed for a casual yet elegant look
- A folded comforter placed at the foot of the bed for extra layering
General Rule: Buy New for Key Items
Bedding, throw pillows, and bath mats are items worth purchasing new before staging. Even relatively new items can look faded after use and washing. New items in these categories are generally affordable and make a massive difference in how your home photographs and shows.
